We really had fun tonight. We missed those who didn’t make it due to the rain. Good news! We’ll repeat Viennese Waltz in January!

Tonight we continued to work on our basic Tango walks, focusing on walking diagonally across the feet and using Contra-Body-Movement. The basic walks also have a staccato quality that requires a quicker release of the free foot/leg than in other dances.

The following patterns were introduced:
Walk, walk
Open telemark to PP
Open fan

Samba class was fun! The patterns we’re working on are:
Left cross turn
Basic (forward and back)
Botafogo
Side Samba walk
Progressive voltas
Side whisks

We put a lot of emphasis on using the abdominal muscles to facilitate the pulsing action – working toward a more internal pulse rather than a bounce.

Mary insists everyone learn to count outloud and sing the counts as it is an amazingly effective tool to get the body to do what we want it to do.

This was the 2nd week of Viennese Waltz. We reviewed the Reverse (left) turn and introduced the Natural (right) turn. Next week we’ll add a closed change to link the patterns together. We’ll be running the same class at 6:30 in January so everyone will have an opportunity to join if they missed this one or repeat (since it takes more than 3 hours to learn the dance – I know that’s a shocker!)

Tonight we learned a Twinkle to a grapevine-3 step turn.

Over the past few weeks we have learned the following patterns:
Twinkle
Open natural (open right) turn
Back Twinkle (impetus)
Feather finish
Open reverse (open left) turn
Check to back twinkle

The Thursday classes at Dance for 2 are lots of fun (as you can see from the video!) On these evenings we focus on patterns that travel around the dance floor and work well for social dancing. There isn’t a lot of time to focus on technique so those dancers who are interested in improving the quality of their movement and lead/follow also attend our Monday night Dance Mastery classes.
